Keir Starmer has announced his resignation as Prime Minister of the United Kingdom.

In his statement, Starmer expressed that after leaving “the biggest job in the country,” he looks forward to spending more time on “the most important job.”

“Being the best husband I can be to my wonderful wife, Vic, who has been a rock by my side through good times and bad,” he said, managing to hold back his emotions. “And being the best dad I can be to my beautiful children, who are my pride and joy,” he concluded. After his announcement, he hugged his wife before returning inside No. 10 Downing Street.

Starmer stated that he will do everything possible to ensure an orderly handover of power and will give his full support to his successor. He added that they will inherit a Britain that is stronger and fairer than it was two years ago.

He took a moment to thank his friends and colleagues who have stood by him for six years, as well as the staff at No. 10 and the “extraordinary civil service.”

Earlier that morning, Starmer informed the King of his decision to resign. He has asked the National Executive Committee of the Labour Party to establish a timetable for the leadership nominations, which will open on 9 July and conclude by the summer recess. This timeline will ensure that a new leader is in place before Parliament reconvenes in September. Until then, Starmer will continue to serve as Prime Minister.
