The government has expressed concern over the growing trend of students displaying wealth on school campuses during celebrations after completing the West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE).
Education Minister Haruna Iddrisu said schools must remain places that promote learning, discipline, and character development rather than environments where students showcase expensive gifts and luxury items.

According to the minister, the increasing practice of presenting students with costly rewards on school premises sends the wrong message to young people and does not reflect the values educational institutions are expected to uphold.
As part of efforts to address the issue, the Ghana Education Service (GES) has prohibited post-examination celebrations involving gifts such as vehicles and money bouquets within school compounds. The directive applies to both public and private schools across the country.
Mr. Iddrisu noted that parents who wish to celebrate their children’s academic success are free to do so on school premises. He emphasized that the government’s priority is to ensure that schools continue to focus on academic excellence and positive character formation.
