Communications Minister, Hon. Sam George Nartey, has underscored the pivotal role of the technology sector in Ghana’s drive to reset and revitalise the national economy. Speaking at the Ministry’s first-quarter press briefing on April 9, he highlighted how technology is being positioned as a cornerstone in Ghana’s emergence as a leader in the digital and competitive global economy.
“The technology sector is critical in positioning Ghana at the top of the digital and competitive global economy,” he stated.
At the heart of this agenda is the 1Million Coders programme, a flagship initiative promised by President John Dramani Mahama during the pre-election period. The programme aims to train one million young Ghanaians in essential digital skills, preparing them for success in a tech-driven world.
“This programme will provide young people with the skills needed to thrive in an increasingly digital and competitive world,” Hon. George explained.
The Ministry has wasted no time turning this vision into action. “We have acted quickly to ensure that this vision becomes a reality, preparing our youth for the future of work,” the Minister affirmed.
He added that efforts are underway to mobilise key partners and secure the resources necessary for the programme’s successful implementation. Recognising technology’s transformative potential, he emphasized the importance of strategic collaborations.
“Through strategic diplomacy and public-private partnerships, we are committed to delivering the results required to upskill our youth and ensure they are equipped for the challenges of the future,” he said.
According to the Minister, the 1Million Coders programme is not just about technology; it is a deliberate move to empower Ghana’s youth by equipping them with tools to thrive in rapidly evolving sectors such as business process outsourcing, knowledge management, and innovation-driven enterprises.
