Mahama expresses hope for stronger Ghana -Czech relations

Former President John Mahama expressed his hope for strengthened relations between Ghana and the Czech Republic during the visit of Czech President Petr Pavel to Ghana. Mahama spoke on the potential for expanding cooperation between the two countries, particularly in the fields of vocational training and industrial development.

He recalled a significant collaboration between Ghana and the Czech Republic that occurred during his presidency—the Ghana Labour Export Programme. This initiative aimed to provide young Ghanaians with internationally recognized vocational skills, making them more competitive for temporary employment opportunities abroad. Mahama highlighted the Czech Republic’s contribution to this program, especially in the area of vocational training.

Mahama also brought attention to the existing partnership between the Czech government and Ghana’s Defence Industries Holding Company (DIHOC), which has proven beneficial in revitalizing local industries. One example he pointed to was the revival of the Kumasi Shoe Factory, which had previously been inactive but is now an important part of Ghana’s local manufacturing sector, thanks to the collaboration with Czech partners.

Looking forward, Mahama expressed optimism that there could be more collaborative ventures between DIHOC and the Czech private sector, which could further promote industrial growth and economic development in both countries. He also spoke positively about the upcoming Ghana-Czech Business Forum, where he hoped both nations could foster new business ties and explore mutually beneficial opportunities.

In conclusion, Mahama welcomed Czech President Petr Pavel and his delegation to Ghana, wishing them a productive and enjoyable visit. He reiterated his commitment to nurturing stronger bilateral ties between Ghana and the Czech Republic, which he believes could bring significant benefits to both nations.
