A tragic incident on the Bolgatanga-Tamale highway near Gbimsi has resulted in the deaths of eight travelers after armed gunmen set up roadblocks and opened fire. The violent confrontation unfolded on Sunday, with assailants targeting vehicles in both Gbimsi and nearby Walewale Town, stopping drivers to identify potential victims amid rising tensions linked to the ongoing Bawku conflict.
Witnesses reported a chaotic scene as passengers were interrogated at gunpoint. One survivor, traveling from Sunyani to Paga, described the horror: “Upon reaching Walewale, people had mounted roadblocks and were searching for individuals to kill. The incident lasted for more than an hour, yet security did not respond.” This account highlights the fear and confusion that gripped those caught in the blockade, as well as frustrations over the delayed intervention from security forces.
The attack, which also saw two vehicles set ablaze, has raised significant security concerns among residents and travelers alike.
