Togolese illegal miner sentenced to 18-years in prison

The sentencing of a Togolese illegal miner to 18 years in prison reflects the serious legal consequences associated with illegal mining activities, commonly referred to as “galamsey” in Ghana. This case highlights the government’s efforts to combat illegal mining and its associated environmental and social impacts. The individual was likely involved in illegal mining operations, which have been a significant concern in both Ghana and Togo due to their detrimental effects on the environment and local communities.

The sentencing demonstrates the enforcement of laws aimed at curbing illegal mining activities, which have been linked to deforestation, pollution, and conflicts over land use. Such sentences serve as a warning to others engaged in illegal mining, highlighting the government’s commitment to addressing these issues and protecting the environment.

This case may also reflect broader regional efforts between Ghana and its neighbours to tackle illegal mining and its cross-border implications.

This development is significant in the ongoing battle against illegal mining in West Africa. The Koforidua Circuit Court A has sentenced Togolese national Shaibu Yaw to 18 years in prison with hard labour for illegal mining in Akyem Mouso, Eastern Region. This ruling is part of efforts to combat illegal mining, known as “galamsey,” which harms the environment in Ghana.

Shaibu was arrested during a crackdown on illegal mining. He pleaded guilty to conspiracy and mining without a license.

High Court Judge Her Lordship Abigail Animah Asare presided over the case and imposed the sentence based on his admission of guilt.

In addition to the prison term, the court fined him 10,000 penalty units for each count, totalling 20,000 penalty units. Although the prison sentence will be served concurrently, the fines must be paid separately for each charge.
