Manchester United’s rising star, Kobbie Mainoo, has expressed a whirlwind of emotions after receiving a surprise call-up to the England national team for the upcoming Euro 2024 qualifiers. The 18-year-old midfielder, initially selected for the under-21 squad, has now been promoted to join Gareth Southgate’s senior side, gearing up for pivotal friendlies against Brazil and Belgium.
Reflecting on his unexpected selection, Mainoo described his feelings as a mix of shock and elation. In an interview with BBC Radio 5 Live’s John Murray, he expressed, “It’s been a whirlwind of emotions, a pretty mad couple of days.”
Mainoo, hailing from Stockport, had his breakthrough moment with Manchester United when he secured his first Premier League start in November. Since then, under the guidance of United’s manager, Erik ten Hag, he has rapidly cemented his position as a regular starter, delivering standout performances, including a crucial 97th-minute winner against Wolves in February.
Acknowledging the challenges of adapting to the rigorous demands of the Premier League, Mainoo emphasized his growing comfort within the league. “I had to adapt quickly to the Premier League. Obviously, it’s very demanding physically, and also mentally, so it’s been tough,” he explained. “But I feel like I’ve found my feet a bit now and I’m enjoying it.”
Despite his recent success, Mainoo remains focused on the ultimate goal of securing a spot in England’s Euro 2024 squad. When asked about his aspirations for the upcoming championship in Germany, he remarked, “I think that’s the end goal for the season, to get into that squad. But obviously I’ve got to focus on club football in the meantime, and hopefully that’ll figure itself out.”
