Ibrahim Mahama made a significant announcement during his visit to the Black Stars’ training base in Rhode Island on Thursday. He joined a distinguished Ghanaian delegation to show support for the national team ahead of their pivotal Group L match.
The delegation was led by Ghana’s Ambassador to the United States, H.E. Victor Smith. It included the Minister for Sports and Recreation, Kofi Adams, and the Minister for Foreign Affairs, Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa. They conveyed a message of encouragement from President John Dramani Mahama, urging the players to give their all in pursuit of a place in the Round of 32.
Speaking directly to the squad and technical team, Ibrahim Mahama applauded head coach Carlos Queiroz for the remarkable transformation he has implemented within the Black Stars in such a short span. “I’m very proud because you came in at a shorter time and have been able to unite the boys. Wonderful performance,” Mahama remarked, praising the Portuguese coach.
He then issued a challenge to the players, encouraging them to achieve victory against Croatia. Mahama promised a generous bonus that would come directly from him if they secured a spot in the knockout phase. “I can offer you a much better bonus than what the taxpayers would provide because I don’t need to go through Parliament. Please do us proud,” he said, eliciting applause and laughter from the players and officials present.
This promise is expected to enhance the team’s morale as Ghana prepares for what is essentially a winner-takes-all match against Croatia.
Throughout the tournament, Ibrahim Mahama has been one of the Black Stars’ staunchest supporters. Earlier this year, his company gained recognition for donating US$5 million during the national fundraising campaign aimed at supporting Ghana’s participation in the 2026 FIFA World Cup, which will be jointly hosted by the United States, Canada, and Mexico.
The Black Stars head into Saturday’s crucial final Group L match in a favourable position, having secured a hard-fought 1-0 win over Panama, followed by a disciplined goalless draw against England. With four points to their name, a victory over Croatia would guarantee their progression to the Round of 32.
With unwavering support from government officials, corporate leaders, and millions of Ghanaians, the Black Stars will take to the field knowing that both national pride and an enticing financial reward await them if they can triumph over Croatia and extend their World Cup journey.
