The Ghana Railway Development Authority (GRDA) has issued a strong warning to the public against purchasing or leasing railway lands and properties from individuals without proper authorisation from the Authority. This announcement comes in light of reports regarding the illegal sale and lease of railway properties in the Western, Western North, and Ashanti Regions by certain individuals, including former employees of the now-defunct Ghana Railway Company Limited (GRCL).
In a statement released on Wednesday, July 29, the GRDA emphasised that these transactions are being conducted without the Authority’s consent, thereby violating laws that govern the management and disposal of railway assets. The Authority highlighted that these actions contravene the Railways Act of 2008 (Act 779) as well as the Public Financial Management Act of 2016 (Act 921).
Recent investigations have revealed efforts by some individuals to backdate transaction documents, creating a misleading appearance of legitimacy. The GRDA firmly stated that these transactions are unlawful and will not be recognised.
The Authority has made it clear that it will not legitimise any lease agreements or transactions involving railway lands and buildings that lack the required approvals, which also contradicts government directives concerning the disposal of public lands and state assets.
In light of these circumstances, the GRDA urges the public to conduct thorough due diligence and verify with the Authority before engaging in any transactions involving railway properties. “Any individual who participates in such unauthorised transactions does so entirely at their own risk,” the Authority cautioned.
Furthermore, the GRDA is collaborating with relevant state institutions to investigate these alleged illegal activities and will take legal action against those found responsible. The Authority reiterated that only transactions that have been officially approved will be deemed valid.
