The National Democratic Congress (NDC) has called on the Inspector General of Police (IGP), Dr. George Akuffo Dampare, and other security agencies to strengthen security measures ahead of the 2024 general elections. At a press conference held on Tuesday, November 19, 2024, the NDC’s National Communications Officer, Sammy Gyamfi, warned that the party would hold both the IGP and the Chief of Defence Staff (CDS) responsible for any loss of life during the elections.
Gyamfi emphasized that the NDC, along with the people of Ghana, would hold the security leadership accountable for any fatalities, asserting that elections should focus on peaceful participation rather than violence. “Elections are about counting heads, not cutting heads,” he stated, stressing that no one should lose their life in the name of elections.
In addition to raising concerns about security, the NDC also accused members of the ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP) of plotting to rig the upcoming elections. Gyamfi urged the Election Security Taskforce to investigate these allegations thoroughly to ensure a peaceful and fair election process. The NDC also called for proactive measures to prevent any attempts to disrupt the election’s integrity.
Despite the security concerns, Gyamfi expressed confidence in the NDC’s victory if the elections are conducted fairly. “We do not doubt that Ghanaians will choose an honest leader who upholds the virtue of truth over one who is allergic to truth,” he remarked, reinforcing the party’s belief in a free and transparent electoral process.
