In response to widespread criticism following his 2023 media address, Special Prosecutor Kissi Agyebeng clarified that he did not attack the judiciary, but rather warned Ghanaians about the challenges in the anti-corruption fight.
During a press conference in November 2023, Agyebeng expressed dissatisfaction with the judiciary’s handling of cases brought by his office, highlighting setbacks in prosecutions. He maintains, however, that his intention was not to glorify his flaws but to draw attention to the difficulties encountered in the fight against corruption.
In an interview with Citi FM on Monday, January 8, Agyebeng addressed the controversy, urging Ghanaians to unite in supporting the battle against corruption due to its detrimental impact on the state. “I wasn’t looking for sympathy. Those who were responding to me negatively thought I was attacking the judiciary. I wasn’t attacking the judiciary. What I was doing was pointing out things that, in our evaluation, we thought were not right,” clarified Agyebeng.
Agyebeng acknowledged that his demeanor during the press conference suggested frustration but emphasized the gravity of the issues at hand. He compared his role to a gong-gong beater sounding an alarm, indicating the need to rethink anti-corruption efforts.
Agyebeng concluded by emphasizing the significance of addressing the identified issues to avoid a potential setback in the fight against corruption. Despite criticism, he remains dedicated to encouraging collaboration and improvement in Ghana’s anti-corruption efforts.
