Charles Nii Armah-Mensah Jnr, known professionally as Shatta Wale, has publicly expressed his discontent with being compared to Highlife icon Daddy Lumba, calling such comparisons disrespectful.
Shatta Wale, who has earned acclaim as a leading figure in Dancehall music, took to social media to address his fans, urging them to cease comparing him with Lumba. Both artists have left indelible marks on Ghanaian music, with Lumba’s prominence spanning from the early 1990s through the 2000s, and Shatta Wale making his mark with a successful career that began as ‘Bandana’ in the early 2000s before rebranding.
Daddy Lumba, a revered name in Highlife music, won the Ghana Music Awards (GMA) ‘Artiste of the Year’ in 2000. Shatta Wale achieved the same accolade 14 years later, a testament to his significant impact in the Dancehall genre.
Despite their respective successes, Shatta Wale’s fans have been debating who has more hits and remains more relevant in today’s music scene. However, Shatta Wale has emphasized that such comparisons are misplaced and fail to honor Lumba’s contributions to Ghanaian music.
In his social media post, Shatta Wale stated, “It is very disrespectful to compare me to the legend Daddy Lumba. Everyone should stop that because the man in question paved the way for your favorites and for me as well.”
