In response to the recent water supply challenges experienced in parts of Accra, the Managing Director of the Ghana Water Company Limited (GWCL), Ing. Dr. Clifford Braimah, has attributed the issue to the surpassing of the water company’s capacity by the growing population of the city.
Residents in various areas, including Adenta, Kasoa, Weija, and Apaapa in La, have raised concerns about irregular water supply, impacting their daily lives. Some residents have resorted to purchasing water from tankers at high prices due to the inconsistent supply.
Expressing their frustration, residents claim that the Ghana Water Company did not communicate plans for temporary water supply cuts, leaving them unprepared for the situation.
Speaking on Citi FM on Monday, January 22, Ing. Braimah acknowledged the necessity of upgrading GWCL’s machinery to meet the rising water demands in Accra. He explained, “Already in Accra, the volume of water we produce has been outgrown by the population, and we are looking at putting up a new system at Kpone to boost our production. However, resource constraints have been a problem since 2017 and 2018. We have been working, but we have not settled on finances.”
Ing. Braimah further admitted that some complaints were related to localized faults, assuring residents that prompt solutions could be implemented if reported to the nearest GWCL office.
