The West African Examinations Council (WAEC) has announced the provisional results for the 2026 Basic Education Certificate Examination (BECE), revealing that numerous candidates have faced sanctions due to examination malpractices.
In a statement released on Wednesday, July 29, WAEC informed that results have been sent to schools via the Metropolitan, Municipal, and District Directors of Education. Candidates can also conveniently check their results online through the Council’s official results portal.
This year, a total of 620,243 candidates participated in the examination, with 304,415 males and 315,828 females represented. These candidates came from 20,789 schools, sitting for their exams at 2,237 centres across the country. WAEC reported that 3,601 registered candidates were absent from the examination.
In a commendable effort to inclusivity, the examination enabled candidates with special educational needs to participate, including 136 visually impaired candidates, 282 hearing-impaired candidates, and 510 others needing additional support.
Following thorough investigations into irregularities and script marking, WAEC’s 37th Meeting of the Final Awards and Examiners’ Appointment Committee approved sanctions against multiple candidates. Specifically, the subject results of 496 candidates were cancelled, while the entire results of 105 candidates faced the same fate.
Furthermore, the subject results of 119 candidates have been withheld, and the entire results of 48 candidates remain pending for further investigation. Additionally, the results of 2,722 candidates from 229 schools have been withheld for further scrutiny, with investigations expected to conclude by August 31, 2026. Following these investigations, the affected results will either be released or cancelled based on the findings.
Candidates whose results have been withheld or cancelled are directed to visit WAEC’s irregularities portal or use the withheld/cancelled results link on the Council’s homepage to find details regarding their situation and the next steps. School heads can also access relevant information using their official login credentials.
WAEC urges candidates and the public to remain vigilant against individuals asserting they can alter or upgrade examination results for a fee, emphasising that all results are secure, tamper-proof, and fully verifiable.
Lastly, WAEC expressed gratitude to the Ministry of Education, the Ghana Education Service, security agencies, school heads, supervisors, invigilators, examiners, and other stakeholders for their invaluable support in ensuring the successful administration of the 2026 BECE and the timely release of results.
