Accra Hearts of Oak has officially announced the return of Ghanaian goalkeeping legend Richard Kingson as the club’s new goalkeepers’ coach. This appointment marks a significant step in the club’s technical team overhaul as they prepare for the 2026/27 season.
With a heartfelt announcement, the club stated, “A legend returns. From guarding the post to grooming the next generation. Welcome home, Richard Kingson, our new Goalkeepers’ Coach.” This move reunites Kingson with Hearts, having previously held an interim coaching position in 2021 before rejoining the Black Stars setup.
Affectionately known as “Olele,” Kingson boasts an illustrious playing career that spans over two decades. He represented Ghana with pride, earning 93 caps for the Black Stars and participating in two FIFA World Cups in 2006 and 2010, as well as several Africa Cup of Nations tournaments.
During his club career, Kingson showcased his skills across Europe with teams such as Hammarby in Sweden, as well as English clubs Birmingham City, Wigan Athletic, and Blackpool. His extensive tenure in Turkey from 1996 to 2007 solidified his reputation for commanding presence and spectacular reflex saves.
Following his retirement from professional football, Kingson built an impressive coaching résumé. He first served as the national team’s goalkeepers’ coach in 2017 and returned to that role in 2021, working closely with both the Black Stars and Black Stars B. In this capacity, he made significant contributions to the development of several goalkeepers, some of whom showcased their talents at the 2022 FIFA World Cup in Qatar. He remained part of the national team’s technical staff until 2024.
Kingson also gained valuable experience in the Ghana Premier League as a goalkeepers’ trainer at Accra Great Olympics, where he received praise for improving the club’s goalkeepers’ performances. His earlier tenure with Hearts familiarised him with the club’s culture and expectations.
This latest appointment comes as Hearts of Oak continues to reshape its technical department under newly appointed Serbian head coach Nebojsa Kapor. The club is confident that Kingson’s extensive experience at both the club and international levels will be crucial in nurturing the next generation of goalkeepers as they aim to return to domestic title contention and secure a place in continental football.
