LAWYER SEEKS COURT ORDER FOR ACCESS TO ABU TRICA AMID EXTRADITION UNCERTAINTY

Lawyer Oliver Barker-Vormawor, counsel for Frederick Kumi, popularly known as “Abu Trica,” has asked the High Court in Accra to direct the Attorney-General to grant him access to his client. The request comes after the court ordered Kumi’s extradition to the United States to face charges in an alleged $8 million romance scam case.

When the matter was called on July 6, Barker-Vormawor informed the court that his client’s whereabouts remained unknown following the extradition order. He stated that neither he nor his legal team knew where Kumi was being held, despite his rearrest after the court’s decision.

The lawyer further told the court that he had formally written to the Attorney-General requesting access to his client but had not received any response. In light of the concerns raised, the court stood down the case to allow the Attorney-General to respond before delivering a ruling on the application.

Meanwhile, the defence’s application to stay execution of the extradition order has been adjourned to July 9, 2026. Kumi was taken back into custody immediately after the High Court dismissed his legal challenge against the extradition. His legal team has indicated that it intends to challenge the ruling before the Supreme Court.
