Afua Asantewaa’s Sing-a-thon World Records Attempt Disqualified Due to Rule Violations
Afua Asantewaa’s ambitious attempt to break the world record for the longest singing marathon has been met with disappointment as officials from the Guinness World Records disclosed the reasons behind her disqualification.
Guinness World Records PR Executive, Alina Polianskaya, revealed via email to Joy FM that Asantewaa’s singathon fell short of meeting the required guidelines, particularly regarding rest break timings, which are standard across all ‘longest marathon’ records.
The announcement of Asantewaa’s disqualification came on Friday, February 23, 2024, as the Guinness World Records stated on X (formerly Twitter), expressing their hope that despite the setback, she would consider making another attempt. They acknowledged the inspiration her endeavor had provided to her fans and wished her luck with any future record attempts.
Moreover, Asantewaa’s team, who had paid for a priority review, received a refund for the fees.
In December 2023, Afua Asantewaa embarked on the challenge to surpass the existing record of 105 hours set in 2012. Her singing marathon commenced at midnight on Sunday, December 24, 2023, and concluded at 7:00 am on December 29, 2023, totaling five days and six hours of continuous singing.
In response to the disqualification, Asantewaa shared on social media that she learned of the outcome just moments before hosting a gala dinner and the launch of the Lebanese Scholarship Alumni Network, attended by President Nana Akufo-Addo. She expressed gratitude for the support received and indicated that she would announce her next steps shortly.
Meanwhile, amidst the setback, Asantewaa has been appointed Tourism Ambassador by the Ghana Tourism Authority, further showcasing her commitment to promoting Ghana’s cultural heritage and tourism industry.
