The Minister expressed growing concern over incidents where licensed firearms were misused for purposes not intended by their original authorisation. He noted that recent months have seen a troubling rise in registered firearms being involved in suicides.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cIn light of these developments, I announce that effective immediately, all permits granted to individuals possessing handguns or firearms are hereby revoked,\u201d Mubarak stated.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">To facilitate this transition, the government will open a new registration period, allowing firearm holders to re-register their weapons in accordance with the revised procedures. \u201cWe acknowledge inadequacies in the previous registration process, which necessitates this proactive step,\u201d he explained.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In conjunction with these changes, the Minister revealed plans to destroy over 2,000 firearms that have either been voluntarily surrendered or confiscated as part of the national gun amnesty program. This initiative aims to tighten firearms regulation and minimize the circulation of illegal weapons.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The revocation of firearm licences coincides with the suspension of the Private Security Organisation (PSO) operating licence for Kantanka Security Services Limited. This suspension follows allegations that the company&#8217;s personnel employed unauthorized uniforms and unlawfully possessed and utilized firearms and ammunition during security operations on June 21, 2026, in Kwabenya, Accra.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A press release from the Ministry, dated June 22, 2026, and signed by Minister Muntaka Mohammed Mubarak, outlined that preliminary investigations revealed potential violations of the Police Service (Private Security Organisations) Regulations, 1992 (L.I. 1571), which govern private security operations in Ghana. The Ministry characterized the utilization of non-prescribed uniforms and the unauthorized handling of firearms as serious breaches that pose significant risks to public safety.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">As a precautionary measure, the Ministry has ordered Kantanka Security Services Limited to halt all operations immediately while investigations are conducted. Institutions have been advised against conducting business with the company until the investigations conclude and further directives are issued.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Ministry assured the public that this suspension is an administrative action intended to protect public safety during the ongoing investigations.
