Ghana’s fight against illegal mining (galamsey) has intensified as His excellency President John Dramani Mahama<\/strong> declared the environmental destruction from the activity a national emergency<\/strong>, while the Attorney-General<\/strong> has ordered an official investigation into two senior members of the opposition NPP over alleged involvement.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

During a durbar on his \u2018Thank You Tour\u2019 of the Western North Region<\/strong>, Mahama voiced alarm at the devastation witnessed in Awaso, Dadieso<\/strong>, and Sefwi Anhwiaso<\/strong>, attributing it largely to illegal mining operations.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\n

\u201cWe are alarmed by the environmental destruction that is reported across Awaso, Dadieso, and Sefwi-Anhwiaso, mainly due to illegal mining. I must be honest, this is a national emergency,\u201d Mahama stated.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n

He pledged that the national anti-galamsey taskforce<\/strong> would intensify efforts to clamp down on mining in forest reserves and water bodies, emphasizing the urgent need to preserve the environment and protect communities.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In a separate but related development, the Attorney-General and Minister of Justice, Dr. Dominic Akuritinga Ayine<\/strong>, has instructed the Economic and Organised Crime Office (EOCO)<\/strong> to investigate two NDC party executives\u2014Mr. Yakubu Abanga<\/strong> and Mr. Joseph Yamin<\/strong>\u2014following \u201crecent credible reports\u201d implicating them in illegal mining operations.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cI am directing your office to invite the following persons named in recent credible reports for interrogation, namely, Mr. Yakubu Abanga and Mr. Joseph Yamin,\u201d the Attorney-General wrote in a letter dated July 15<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n

The directive also empowers EOCO to probe any additional individuals<\/strong> found to be complicit in illegal mining activities.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

These developments mark a significant escalation in Ghana\u2019s anti-galamsey efforts, with both political leadership<\/strong> and law enforcement<\/strong> converging to tackle a crisis that has ravaged ecosystems, polluted water bodies, and sparked public outcry.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
