The Ghana Football Association (GFA) has taken decisive action in the wake of the Black Stars’ disappointing failure to qualify for the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON), marking the first time in 21 years that Ghana will miss the continental tournament. After a lackluster campaign in Group F, where the Black Stars finished last with only three points, the GFA expressed deep regret and issued a formal apology to the Ghanaian public. In a statement released on November 21, 2024, the association acknowledged the immense disappointment felt by fans and admitted that the team’s performance fell far short of the nation’s high expectations.
In response to this underperformance, the GFA’s Executive Council convened on November 20, 2024, and made the bold decision to dissolve the Black Stars’ Management Committee with immediate effect. The GFA thanked the committee members for their service to Ghanaian football but emphasized the need for change. As part of the reforms, the Executive Council will meet with Head Coach Otto Addo on November 27, 2024, to review his technical report and assess the overall performance of the coaching staff. This move is part of a broader effort to address the current decline in the team’s fortunes and restore Ghana’s status in African football.
The GFA has also announced plans for a stakeholders’ retreat to take place on November 28, 2024, at the Ghanaman Soccer Center of Excellence. This retreat will bring together a wide range of stakeholders, including football administrators, players, coaches, former captains, media representatives, and even traditional leaders, to discuss ways to improve the performance of the Black Stars and Ghanaian football in general. The goal is to gather valuable input from diverse sectors and create a comprehensive roadmap for the future of the national teams, ensuring that such a failure does not happen again.
