A 20-year-old mechanic, Akwasi Agyeman, has been sentenced to 25 years in prison by the Asante Bekwai Circuit Court for attacking and raping a pregnant student during the ongoing West Africa Secondary School Certificate Examination (WASSCE).
Agyeman, who pleaded guilty to charges of robbery and rape, was convicted by Judge Isaac Apietu. The crime took place on August 25 in the community of Sanso, Bekwai Municipality. The victim, a 20-year-old student from Bekwai S.D.A Senior High School, was eight months pregnant at the time of the assault.
According to Police Detective Chief Inspector Eric Twum, Agyeman broke into the victim’s room around midnight while brandishing a knife. He threatened her and demanded her valuables, making off with an iPhone 7 worth GHS 1,400 and an itel phone valued at GHS 1,000. After robbing her, Agyeman proceeded to sexually assault the victim.
The victim’s cries for help drew the attention of local residents, who quickly intervened, apprehending Agyeman and recovering the stolen items along with the weapon used in the attack.
Following his arrest, Agyeman was handed over to the police, who conducted an investigation leading to his prosecution and sentencing.
