John Dumelo, the National Democratic Congress (NDC) parliamentary candidate for Ayawaso West Wuogon, has issued a formal apology to Lydia Alhassan, the incumbent Member of Parliament and New Patriotic Party (NPP) candidate for the same constituency.
This apology comes after significant backlash from the Widows Association of Ayawaso West Wuogon, who condemned his recent remarks about Alhassan. John Dumelo had insinuated that Lydia Alhassan was somehow responsible for the death of her late husband, the former MP for the area.
In a statement posted on Facebook, Dumelo expressed his regret and offered a full retraction of his previous comments. “I apologize and unreservedly retract my previous statements. I extend my sincere and unconditional apologies to Hon. Lydia Alhassan for my remarks made during the Media General public engagement,” Dumelo wrote.
Dumelo clarified that his comments did not reflect his personal values or principles. He explained that his remarks were a reaction to personal attacks from supporters of the Minister of Sanitation and Water Resources, which included false claims about his own family. “While my comments were a response to these attacks, I acknowledge that my reaction was inappropriate,” he said.
Dumelo reaffirmed his commitment to the constituency, promising to focus on fostering development and positive change for the community.
