A tense standoff between Philippine police and followers of a fugitive preacher wanted by the FBI has entered its fourth day, with nearly 2,000 officers surrounding a large church compound. Pastor Apollo Carreon Quiboloy, who leads the Kingdom of Jesus Christ church and claims to be the “appointed son of God,” has been evading capture for over three years.
Quiboloy, 74, is under indictment in the United States on charges related to a sex trafficking ring. Prosecutors allege that he and his associates coerced young women and girls into sexual activities through threats of “eternal damnation.” The preacher has consistently denied these accusations.
The Philippine police believe that Quiboloy is hiding within a vast 30-hectare (75-acre) complex that features a cathedral, college, bunker, and a taxiway connecting to Davao International Airport. Authorities launched their raid on Saturday in Davao City, but their efforts have been met with significant resistance from Quiboloy’s supporters. The followers have reportedly hurled stones at police, set up barricades with burning tires, and engaged in other forms of violent protest.
During the confrontation, a 51-year-old follower suffered a fatal heart attack on Saturday. Authorities have stated that his death was unrelated to the police operation.
