In a startling incident at the Korle Bu Teaching Hospital in Accra, a Chinese national serving a one-year jail term at Nsawam Prison managed to escape while undergoing medical treatment.
The inmate, who had been incarcerated for a yet-to-be-disclosed offense and was awaiting trial for a separate serious case, reportedly feigned illness, compelling prison authorities to transport him to the hospital for treatment outside the prison premises. Sources indicate that the escape occurred when the prisoner managed to elude the vigilance of accompanying prison officers.
Authorities have intensified efforts to locate the fugitive, circulating WhatsApp messages with the inmate’s photograph among prison officers to solicit information from the public. As of now, the Ghana Prison Service has refrained from making an official statement on the matter.
The escapee had originally been apprehended in Tema before facing legal proceedings resulting in a one-year sentence at Nsawam Prison. This recent incident has raised concerns about the security measures in place during the transportation of inmates for medical purposes.
Meanwhile, the officers responsible for overseeing the escaped inmate are reportedly under investigation. The circumstances surrounding the escape are expected to prompt a thorough review of security protocols within the prison system to prevent similar incidents in the future.
